Salinas Valley State Prison officials investigate deadly stabbing

SOLEDAD, Calif. (KION) Salinas Valley State Prison officials are investigating the stabbing death of an inmate as a homicide.

Isaac M. McCuan was pronounced dead Saturday at 12:17 p.m.

SVSP officials said Juan Hernandez, who was McCuan's cellmate, has been identified as the suspect.

40-year-old McCuan was serving life with the possibility of parole for first-degree murder and another street gang related offense.

31-year-old Hernandez was serving life without parole for first-degree murder, among other charges.

SVSP said officials are conducting a 24-hour threat assessment.

The investigation is ongoing.
