Greenfield opens cooling center on 100 degree day
GREENFIELD, Calif. (KION) Adrena Ramirez and her kids stopped by the Greenfield Civic Center, Tuesday, for a bottle of cold water as temperatures hit the 100s.
"I got off of work early because it was so hot," said Ramirez. She works in the fields, and like many on the Central Coast, does not have air conditioning at home.
"We have nature's air conditioner, or the wind, coming through just about every afternoon with the exception of 5, 6, 7 days in the summertime," said Greenfield City Manager, Paul Wood.
Inland areas have felt the heat this week and more hot weather could be on the way.
For the first time since March, the City of Greenfield opened its doors to offer people a cool place to escape.
"It's important to drink a lot of water on days like this," and Greenfield resident, Benito Marcos.
Inside the city council chambers, chairs were spaced six feet apart, employees wore gloves and masks and hand sanitizer was provided.
"With the pandemic restrictions it is different this year. We are following the rules," said Wood.
Wood said the city will open its cooling center from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on days that temperatures are forecasted in, and above, the 90s.
City officials have seen less participation than last Summer, but said coming to the center is safe for residents. "People can relax and have some water. When they leave we have people come up and disinfect the tables and chairs," said Wood.
