Apartment fire on Ford Road in Carmel Valley

CARMEL VALLEY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Monterey County Regional Fire confirmed that there was a structure fire on Thursday afternoon at the Airport Apartments on Ford Road in Carmel Valley that injured one resident and one firefighter.

Both the resident and the firefighter have non-serious injuries, according to the fire department. Crews said that unfortunately, one dog is deceased but that a few reptiles have been rescued.

The cause of the fire is still unknown at this time, but the fire department did confirm that only four units (1 building) was damaged. The other two buildings containing eight units have minor smoke exposure but are expected to be inhabitable, according to the fire department.

The fire department does not have a current number of people who have been displaced at this time.

While the cause is still under investigation, they did say that one person was taken to natividad hospital with non-urgent injuries.

Approximately 12:40 in the afternoon, Monterey Fire received calls of a structure fire here at the apartment complex.

Luckily, crews were close by and they were able to make it here and stop the spread of the fire throughout the entire complex.

"Unfortunately, we do have one civilian injury," Matt Lumadue Monterey County Regional Fire District said. "They were transported by ground code three to Natividad and we did have one firefighter injury. They were transported by ground also code two."

The firefighters on scene don’t know the exact number of displaced residents.

They did receive quite a bit of help, agencies from Seaside, Monterey, Salinas, Marina and Cal Fire all responded.

A resident that lives close by who called 9-1-1 told KION that they could smell plastic burning from their apartment when he walked outside to the next complex he saw overhead smoke coming out from the main back door and the balcony.

CHP has reopened the road at this time. This is a developing story.
