Winter storm readiness
SALINAS, Calif. (KION)
As winter fast approaches, Monterey County and National Weather Service officials warn residents about the dangers of floods and mudslides in areas impacted by the recent wildfires.
On Wednesday, county officials and experts discussed measures to keep people and homes protected throughout any upcoming rainfall.
"Even though I might tell you that we’re only going to end up at 25 to 50 percent of our average annual precipitation for the end of winter, all of that precipitation could come in one whopper of a storm and could wreak havoc on th burn scars and the other areas outside of the burn scars," says Brian Garcia, Warning Coordination Meteorologist.
County officials are urging people to stay vigilant of weather and environmental conditions.
Some of the tips they suggested are having an evacuation plan ahead of time, avoiding evacuating at night time as it can be harder to see oncoming hazards and keeping an eye on the roads when driving as any mudslides, debris and rocks can come down rather quickly.
Officials say sand bags can be a good option for a protective barrier when applied correctly.
An expert from the Resource Conservation District of Monterey County explains homeowners should also seek licensed experts to find the best possible solutions to protect properties and homes.
“Sometimes, without intending it, you may cause more damage than you might have foreseen. One size doesn’t fit all, every property is unique, don’t feel like you have to make a huge ditch on the slope of your backyard just to get that water away from your house, it may cause more problems than it’s worth," says Jaime Tuitele-Lewis.
