PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The Safeway employee who was one of two people killed in a Bend, Oregon, supermarket shooting had time to flee but instead hid behind a produce cart and attacked the assailant with a produce knife, which likely saved lives. Police say surveillance video of the Sunday shooting shows 66-year-old Donald Ray Surrett Jr. waiting in his hiding spot until the gunman looked the other way before emerging with the knife. The gunman fatally shot Surrett and then killed himself as police closed in. Officers found an AR-15-style rifle and a shotgun near his body as well as 120 rifle rounds.
