Russia-Ukraine war: Key things to know about the conflict

The fight for Ukraine’s cities is thundering across its suburbs. The Ukrainian military says that after a fierce battle, Ukrainian troops regained control of the Kyiv suburb of Makariv on Tuesday, allowing them to retake a key highway to the west and block Russian troops. But Russian forces took partial control of three northwest suburbs. Russian forces also used ships in the Sea of Azov to shell the embattled southern port city of Mariupol. Civilians making the dangerous escape from Mariupol described fleeing through street gun battles and past corpses. More than 3.5 million people have fled Ukraine since the war began. There has been no word of a diplomatic breakthrough, as the U.S. is planning to announce more sanctions this week.
