Monterey County Kweens' Kounsel members visit Wake Up on KION News Channel 46 to discuss how important Doulas can be to the birthing process.

Oxford defines a "doula" as a woman, typically without formal obstetric training, who is employed to provide guidance and support to a pregnant woman during labor. The definition also carries to supporting the mother of a newborn baby.

According to the Kweens' Kounsel, black women in particular have three times a higher mortality rate than women of other races.

The Network for Public Health Law says doula access is an effective way to reduce the high maternal mortality and morbidity rates in the United States.

Some hospitals in the U.S. prevent doulas from entering their facilities.

Nhatalie Hudson and Thenedra Roots with the Kweens' Kounsel discuss hurdles they've faced as doulas, plus their experience as recipients of doula programs.
