Design Day in Marina
The community of Marina came together on Monday, helping to design a new all inclusive playground for the city!
Designers from Leather and Associates were joined by community ambassadors for a tour of classrooms at all 3 elementary schools in Marina, speaking with students about what they wanted to see in their community's new park. Students were encouraged to not just give suggestions, but to hand in their own designs for the park, which were all on display on Monday night.
Organizers say that they were impressed by how many children took inclusivity into account in their designs, saying that many wanted to make sure that the park would be fun for the kids with disabilities in their lives. Swings, slides, and spinning were all popular choices from the kids.
This playground isn't just being inspired by the community, it will be built by them too. Organizers say that they need the help of locals to make the playground a reality, whether they're a skilled builder or not. Volunteers will be taught the skills they need to do their part in the construction of the play space, and organizers say that most people who sign up for one shift will come back for the entire build.
