Santa Cruz Wharf sees another wave of anchovies, sparking fears of another potential die off
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION-TV) The Santa Cruz Harbor is seeing another wave of anchovies in its waters Friday, sparking fears of another potential die off, less than six months after the last one.
Video sent in by a KION viewer show the small fish crowding those waters.
Harbor staff say these large schools of fish reduce oxygen levels to a point where they could die off en masse.
Normally the port district's aerator system would be used to keep oxygen levels up, but they were pulled from service in mid-December after running continuously for seven months last year, according to harbor staff.
