High-speed pursuit leads to multi-car collision in Gonzales Friday evening
GONZALEZ, Calif. (KION-TV) - A high speed pursuit involving multiple law enforcement agencies ended in Gonzales Friday evening, leading to a multi-car pile up.
Around 2:34pm on Friday, The Monterey County Sheriff's Office says deputies were dispatched to a suspicious vehicle near Los Coches and Thorn Roads over possible Mail Theft in the area. Hours later, at 5:04pm, a deputy found a vehicle matching the description and attempted a traffic stop, that vehicle refusing to stop and the deputy giving chase going Northbound on Highway 101.
The Sheriff's office says the deputy abandoned the chase once the suspect entered Soledad, but a Soledad police officer picked up the chase soon after back on Northbound 101, following the Driver to Gonzales where they attempted to ram a Gonzales police car head on.
The vehicle slammed into the side railing of the bridge over Gonzales, losing their front right tire before hitting Jeep, and driving down to 5th street where it crashed into Kia Soul and finally came to a stop. The Sheriff's office says there were no major injuries.
A female driver resisted arrest after the crash, an officer being forced to tase her. A male passenger was also in the vehicle, both were taken into custody by Soledad police. The Sheriff's office says it was discovered that the woman had a warrant out for her arrest, and the passenger is currently on parole.
Witnesses add the fleeing vehicle hit multiple cars before coming to a stop. Locals say this crash is concerning since its in the area of multiple schools.
"This is a very busy street, there's a school, school went lockdown after school program, kids were scared," witness Henry Martinez said.
"I'm a little worried about it because I don't want anyone getting injured really, I like my how it is, I really do," witness Devin Sturtevant said.
