MCSO combat underage drinking with decoy operations

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION) -- Two clerks and an adult were cited during sting operations aimed at combating underage drinking in Monterey County.

Monterey County Sheriff's Office partnered with the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control for the operations. A Minor Decoy Operation was performed within the City of Salinas on January 10.

During this operation, a minor was set up to purchase alcohol from 19 different stores direct from the clerks. Of the 19 stores, only two clerks were cited for selling alcohol to a minor.

Both now face a minimum fine of $250 and 24 to 32 hours of community service. This can also lead to possible suspension or a permanent revoke of their business license.

The second operation known as a Shoulder Tap operation, was done in North Monterey County on January 11. For this kind of operation, a minor will ask an adult to purchase alcohol for them as they stand out outside of liquor or convenience stores.

The minor will also let it be known they are underage. One adult was cited for buying alcohol for the minor and will now face a minimum fine of $1,000 and 24 hours of community service.
