Carmel-by-the-Sea voting on continuing private courier service
CARMEL-BY-THE-SEA, Calif. (KION) -- Carmel-by-the-Sea City Council is voting on continuing private courier service that delivers mail to those unable to pick up their own mail.
The resolution would allow to extend a multi-year contract until June 30 of this year with the option to extend after. In the new resolution, the city is looking to create a new contract with MoGo Express after years for working with Peninsula Messenger Services.
Those living in Carmel-by-the-Sea rely on P.O. boxes for their mail delivery as no homes in the city have home addresses. Yet, some residents cannot pick up their mail either due to age or disability.
The service has also been provided for free with those eligible filling out an application and providing a doctor's note. This also made it so that the overall cost of the service would be reduced.
Currently, approximately 90 people in Carmel-by-the-Sea use the service on a day-to-day basis. This cost the city about $7,500 a month, or $90,000 a year, to run.
The new resolution would name for a new contract that is not expected to exceed $270,000 for the next three years.
