A San Jose family thanks Jimmy Carter for his time with Habitat for Humanity

SAN JOSE, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife volunteered often with Habitat for Humanity, helping families purchase and build their homes.

According to KTVU, one San Jose family who were able to purchase a home in 2013 because of Habitat for Humanity, attended a special tribute for the Carters put on by Habitat for Humanity.

"We have big community and family, we celebrate everything in the backyard…We are so happy we are blessed because of Jimmy Carter," homeowner Tiruwork Leyew told KTVU.

Leyew said that back in 2013, former President Carter and his wife Roslyn volunteered to help work on the family's home.

"That’s why we always call this Jimmy Carter’s door," Leyew told KTVU, referencing the house's front door. It's just a gift."

For over 30 years, President Carter and his wife volunteered with Habitat for Humanity in addition to founding the Carter Work Project that helped over 4,000 families find homes.

"Him and his wife, they don’t care about money, they don’t care about other things, they care about people," Leyew recalled her time alongside the Carters.

Habitat for Humanity wrote a touching tribute for the Carters upon the former president's death.
