Three minors, including toddler, hospitalized, following crash just south of Salinas

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV) Three minors were hospitalized Tuesday night following a crash involving a semi-truck and Ford Escape, according to CHP Monterey.

Officials say, the incident took place around 5:32 p.m. Tuesday on U.S. Highway 101 approach Somavia Road.

CHP Monterey adds, a Ford Escape with three people was traveling at an unknown speed on US-101 northbound, approaching Somavia Road. The driver and front passenger of the Ford were minors from Chualar, while a toddler was seated in the rear seat.

Investigators said the semi-truck made a left turn and started to cross the northbound lanes of US-101, directly into the path of travel of the Ford. The Ford crashed into the trailer and was subsequently stuck under the trailer.

The driver and the two passengers of the Ford were transported to a local hospital, with one minor urgently airlifted to a trauma center, according to CHP. The driver of the semi-truck was uninjuried.

CHP said the cause of the crash remains under investigation, with alcohol or drugs not believed to be a factor in the crash.
