North Santa Cruz County prepares for wet weather ahead of the weekend

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- As an atmospheric river approaches, rain and wind are picking up across the region. 

North Santa Cruz County is bracing for light to moderate rain and wind conditions many residents are preparing for what's ahead. 

The light to moderate rain and wind conditions are expected to continue through the night, with many in the area already on high alert.

Boulder Creek residents have seen with past storms how quickly the situation can escalate with major power outages being a constant concern for locals.

"Today I went and bought some lamp oil," Nathan Adams Boulder Creek resident said. "I have a small propane heater that i keep in the house. I bought a tank of propane to heat that up, since a lot of the times whenever we get big rain and winds will often have power outages."

As the weather passes through Boulder Creek neighbors are stocking up on propane. 

Trees swaying in the wind and the rain could started coming down Wednesday night.

People are preparing to stay vigilant through the night.

"You have to make sure that your patio furniture is put away and make sure that nothing's going to blow off your property, it's already getting windy here," Rosa Linda Lameira Boulder Creek resident said. Plenty of wood to burn in case the power goes off."

"We make sure the drainages are clear, the gutters are clear on the roof, and then we charge our we have a house battery," Lisa Young, Boulder Creek said." We get that charge to make sure we have that ready."

Boulder Creek residents have seen with past storms just how quickly the situation can escalate with major power outages being a constant concern for locals.

The neighbors are keeping a very close eye out here as the heavy weather passes through.

Santa Cruz County is offering extra support services, The Warming Center Program will be providing hypothermia gear and essentials every Wednesday from noon to 3pm.

The Warming Center Program will be giving out essentials at 150 Felker Street.
