Donald Trump’s lawyers urge judge to ignore prosecutors and dismiss hush money conviction

NEW YORK (AP) — As prosecutors push to preserve President-elect Donald Trump’s hush money conviction, his lawyers are urging a judge to ignore them and scrap the case before he takes office in January. Trump’s lawyers said in a letter Wednesday that continuing with the case will interfere with the former and future president’s transition back to the White House and impede his ability to run the country. Prosecutors said this week that they oppose dismissing Trump’s case. But they expressed openness to delaying his sentencing until after his forthcoming term. Trump was convicted of falsifying business records to cover up a scheme to influence the 2016 election by paying hush money to squelch a story of extramarital sex. He denies the allegations.
