83-year-old woman viciously attacked in her home; Monterey County Sheriff’s Office

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Monterey County Sheriff's Office announced Thursday that deputies were called out to the 30 block of Florence Avenue in Pajaro on Wednesday around 12:40 p.m. after reports of an 83-year-old woman was attacked.

Deputies said that they responded to the woman who was bleeding from severe head trauma. They say that a neighbor alerted them to the incident that led deputies inside the home.

There, they found the victim in addition to a second person inside the home, according to the Sheriff's Office.

The person who called deputies told them that he was inside his home when he heard a neighbor screaming. Deputies say that he told them he recognized one of the voices and went inside the home to investigate. They say that upon entering the home, the neighbor saw a female suspect hitting his 83-year-old neighbor repeatedly over the head with a knife sharpener.

The neighbor pulled the suspect off of the victim and dialed 911 for help, according to deputies.

Monterey County Sheriff Deputies say that they were able to confirm the second person in the residence was the suspect, a 37-year-old Schauntel Marina Gomez of Milpitas. She was immediately taken into custody and booked into the Monterey County Jail for attempted murder; assault with a deadly weapon; and elder abuse with a bail set at $1,030,000.00, according to deputies.

The Monterey County DA's office says that Gomez is pleading not guilty to attempted murder as well as the other charges. They've also confirmed that Gomez's bail is set for over $1 million and is expected in court on October 23.

The victim was transported to a local trauma center for her injuries and has been listed in stable condition after undergoing surgery, according to the Sheriff's Office.
