MORONI, Comoros (AP) — Authorities say the president of the Indian Ocean island nation of Comoros has been “slightly injured” in a knife attack while attending the funeral of a religious leader. They say the suspect, who was identified as a 24-year-old male soldier, was found dead in a police cell on Saturday, a day after the attack. President Azali Assoumani’s office said in a statement that his injuries were not serious. A public prosecutor said there was an investigation into the suspect’s motive and his death. Assoumani first came to power in a coup in 1999, one of more than a dozen coups or attempted coups in Comoros since its independence from France in 1975.
