Chinese leader Xi meets US national security adviser as the two powers try to avoid conflict

BEIJING (AP) — Chinese leader Xi Jinping has met with U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan as the latter wound up a three-day visit to Beijing with the stated aim of keeping communications open in a relationship that has become increasingly tense in recent years. Sullivan said on Thursday that the United States believes “that competition with China does not have to lead to conflict or confrontation” and that “the key is responsible management through diplomacy.” The U.S. and China have grown at odds over a range of issues, from global security to industrial policy on electric vehicle and solar panel manufacturing.
