CHP: Man killed in head-on collision in Aptos

APTOS, Calif. (KION-TV) -- CHP Santa Cruz said it's investigating a deadly crash on Freedom Boulevard east of McDonald Road Saturday morning.

The agency said it happened at approximately 7:35 a.m. A 49-year old man was heading east at an undetermined speed on Freedom Blvd. in a red 2017 Honda CRV while 23-year old Santa Cruz resident Luke Thomas Salem, was driving westbound on the same road in a white 1966 Chrysler Newport. For reasons still under investigation, the CHP said the cars collided head-on.

Although life-saving measures were taken, Salem was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. The Honda's driver suffered minor injuries and was taken to a local hospital.

The CHP said the cause is under investigation and it is unknown if drugs and/or alcohol played a part.

A portion of Freedom Blvd. was shut down following the crash; the road was reopened after several hours.
