KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — At least 18 people were killed when a landfill collapsed in the Ugandan capital, according to the Red Cross. Fourteen others were injured when the Kiteezi landfill, which serves as a waste disposal site for much of Kampala, collapsed late Friday. City officials say at least two of the dead were children. The landfill’s collapse is believed to have been triggered by heavy rainfall. The Uganda Red Cross says the death toll reached 18 after more bodies were retrieved from Sunday. A Red Cross spokeswoman says searchers were being hampered by rain.
