Cannacruz appeal granted by Salinas City Council, pot shop’s move to South Main to return for discussion on June 25

SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Salinas City Council members have granted an appeal by Cannacruz after the pot shop was initially prevented from moving to a location along South Main Street.

The denial was initially issued by the Salinas Planning Commission before being deferred to council for discussion.

Salinas City Council eventually granting the appeal by a 5-2 vote, with councilmembers Sandoval and Valenzuela issuing a "no" vote.

The motion allows for discussion to continue on a potential move for Cannacruz at a meeting scheduled for June 25, 2024.

Potential Cannacruz move to South Main St. location left for Salinas council to discuss

The owner of a Salinas Cannacruz pot shop will have to wait to hear from city council members as to whether or not he can move his shop from a location along Abbott Street to South Main Street.

This comes after the city's planning commission voted to defer to the city council after a meeting earlier this week.

Planning commissioners heard and shared concerns regarding Cannacruz's move to that portion of South Salinas.

Some involved the potential for criminal activity, traffic and Salinas High School students possibly being exposed to marijuana use.

Representatives for Cannacruz argued they would address security by having a guard at the South Main Street facility, plus fencing all around the parking lot of the site.

The company also argues the site they want to move to is far enough from the school as required by the state and the city.

KION's Dania Romero hears from both sides of the argument and community reaction tonight.
