Disaster Relief Funds Available for people affected by the Highway 1 slip-out

MONTEREY COUNTY, California — The Community Foundation for Monterey County announced on Monday that it is accepting donations through its Big Sur Disaster Relief Fund to assist the community affected by the slip-out of Rocky Creek Bridge in Big Sur along Highway 1.

The organization said that all donations will go to organizations providing relief to affected residents living or working in Big Sur.

The washout was caused by heavy winter rains and greatly impacted access for residents commuting to and from school and work, causing portions of the road to remain temporarily closed. Businesses and parks were also affected by the travel restrictions.

“Many businesses are already temporarily closed or open on a limited basis only," said Kirk Gafill who is the president of the Big Sur Chamber of Commerce. "The lack of access via Highway 1, the only transportation route in or out of the Big Sur Coast, imposes significant burdens on school-age children in their access to classes and resources, for teachers to access the local elementary schools and for the Big Sur Health Center staff to provide essential medical care to the community,” said

Two daily convoys have been running since April 1 which only allow residents and essential workers to commute through the area.

Caltrans said they anticipate repairs to be done by Memorial Day.

January 2023 had previously closed access points due to slides south of Big Sur.
