Ramsay Park hosting circus amid efforts to renovate Watsonville park

WATSONVILLE, Calif. (KION-TV) -- It'll be the first all-inclusive park in south Santa Cruz county, but construction is delayed because for the first time ever the park is hosting a circus.

“This has been a project we have been waiting for," director of parks and community services of Watsonville Nick Calubaquib said. "It’s been a long time coming."

After decades, the Ramsay park Renaissance project is getting closer and closer to breaking ground.

It's a $33 million project that will be invested in the largest park in the community.

"We’re converting the softball field into a multi-use synthetic turf softball, baseball, and soccer field," Calubaquib said. "We’re also adding an all new playground and dog park and nature center.”

The city says lights will be installed for youth leagues to be able to play at night.

Construction could start in mid-May.

"They’ll probably start with the sports field first before they start with anything else and again constructions anticipated to take about 15 months," Calubaquib said.

One of the final events at Ramsay park is the Circus Royal Spectacular.

It's also the first time the park is hosting this circus.

“We work all California state and the city of Watsonville asks us to come here to perform at Ramsay park," said Jonathan Carro a performer for Circus Royal Spectacular. "We said why not."

The circus here is open April 12th through the 21st and construction for the Ramsay park renaissance project is anticipated to last 18 months.

As construction is underway the pump track, skatepark, soccer central facility and tennis courts will still remain open during this time
