The 49ers head into camp with a deep roster and quarterback questions

By The Associated Press

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS (15-5)

CAMP SITE: Santa Clara, California

KEY ADDITIONS: DT Javon Hargrave, QB Sam Darnold, K Jake Moody, CB Isaiah Oliver, DL Clelin Ferrell, DL Austin Bryant, DB Myles Hartsfield, OL Jon Feliciano, OL Matt Pryor.

KEY LOSSES: Defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans, RT Mike McGlinchey, QB Jimmy Garoppolo, DB Jimmie Ward, LB Azeez Al-Shaair, K Robbie Gould, DL Samson Ebukam, DL Charles Omenihu, CB Emmanuel Moseley, DL Jordan Willis, OL Daniel Brunskill.

KEY STORYLINES: Quarterback Brock Purdy underwent major elbow surgery in March and just started a throwing program late in the offseason. Getting him healthy for the start of the season is the top priority in camp. Most of the starting spots for the Niners are set with Colton McKivitz set to replace McGlinchey at right tackle, Oliver in line for Ward’s spot at nickel cornerback and second-year player Drake Jackson expected to take a bigger role at edge rusher opposite Nick Bosa. The biggest competition will be at quarterback where former No. 3 overall picks Trey Lance and Sam Darnold are fighting to be the No. 2 option behind Purdy and possible starter if Purdy has any setbacks. After back-to-back losses in the NFC title games, the 49ers are hoping to get over the hump and return to the Super Bowl and deliver the franchise its sixth title. Nearly all the pieces are in place for San Francisco to have a chance as long as the play at quarterback is good enough.
