Evacuation orders now warnings along Salinas River

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV) The Monterey County Sheriff's Office has downgraded all evacuation orders to warnings along the Salinas River.

This is less than a week after Sheriff Tina Nieto said that the Monterey Peninsula could become isolated from the rest of the country due to possible closures of Highways due to flooding.

"If you are in an Evacuation Warning Zone, prepare to leave. Be ready to leave if an evacuation order is issued. Gather essential items now to be ready to go," said the Monterey County Sheriff's Office.

Caltrans: Highway 1 closure "unlikely" plus "little risk" to Highway 68 during Salinas River high flow event

SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Caltrans crews in the Monterey County area said a closure of Highway 1 is "unlikely" to be needed after some concerns the Salinas River would flood onto the highway.

The agency added that Highway 68 near Spreckels remains open, too, and is expected to stay open during the current high-flow event.

Crews were able to inspect bridges and roads Saturday morning that could have potentially been impacted by flooding out of the Salinas River.

Despite this, Caltrans said they will continue monitoring Highway 1 and the high flow event along the Salinas River should any changes arise.

There was initial concern from the Monterey County Sheriff's Office that the Monterey Peninsula would be choked off from the rest of the Central Coast, with major highways being blocked off by floodwater.

The river reached above 24 feet Friday morning before slowly receding throughout the rest of that day.

Monterey County officials update on anticipated flood impacts on the Monterey Peninsula

SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV)- Less than 24 hours after the Monterey County Sheriff's Office issued evacuation orders between Highway 68 and the Salinas Lagoon.

County officials will hold a press conference at 1 p.m. Thursday to update the public on the "anticipated flooding impacts between the community of Spreckels and the Monterey Peninsula."

This press conference will be held on Blanco Road at the Salinas River Crossing.

Sheriff: Peninsula could become an island as flooding is expected for Salinas Valley

SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV)- The Monterey County Sheriff's Office, in conjunction with the Department of Emergency Management, issued evacuation orders between Highway 68 and the Salinas Lagoon in a Wednesday press conference.

Monterey County Sheriff Tina Nieto said they expect flooding to overtake the Salinas River and spread across the peninsula like in 1995. She stressed the peninsula could become an island.

The flooding concerns on the roadways will likely impact the approaches to the bridges, low lying
intersections, and local surface streets. Roads near that are expected to be affected include State Route 68, River Road, Reservation Road, Blanco Road, multiple secondary roads, and potentially US 101. Residents both on the peninsula and in the Salinas area should expect to be cut off for two to three days.

County of Monterey Health Department

River Road, Davis Road and potentially even Highway 1 could be put under an evacuation order beginning noon Thursday.

Based on models, State and local officials are preparing for continued flood stage thru 9 p.m. Sunday, January 15.

Officials say the bridges will weather the storm impacts and withstand flooding.
