Northern limit of Highway 1 closure has moved south to Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn
BIG SUR, Calif. (KION-TV) UPDATE ON JAN. 11, 2023 AT 12:02 PM: Caltrans District 5 announced that the limit of the northern closure of Highway 1 on the Big Sur Coast has been moved south to Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn.
Caltrans crews are actively responding multiple active slides within the closure area today.
Officals said that the gates at Paul's Slide will be closed until further notice.
Travelers coming from the South will encounter a closure on Highway 1 at the elephant seal viewing area which is four miles north of San Simeon. A significant slide, one mile south of Ragged Point, extends over both lanes of travel which makes the highway impassable. Officials said that access will be restricted to Ragged Point from the south for several weeks.
Update Jan. 1, 2023, at 5:13 p.m.- Caltrans said they will leave the road closure on Highway 1 open until Saturday at 5 p.m.
It will allow people to get between Ragged Point and Deetjen's Big Sur Inn. Caltrans said the reason for the short reopening is favorable weather ahead of the next storm.

There is currently a full closure of Highway 1 after multiple reported rockslides, per Caltrans.
Caltrans said the closure is from Ragged Point to the south of Big Sur in Monterey County. The closure is due to a rockslide, Caltrans expects more rockslides in the area.
There is no estimate for reopening.

Caltrans announced the expected reopening of Highway 1 along the Big Sur Coast Tuesday, but also said it will shut down once again on Wednesday ahead of another round of storms.
The exact timing of the Tuesday reopening is unknown, however Caltrans said they'll provide an update once crews are able to inspect the area from Ragged Point to just south of Deetjen's Big Sur Inn.
For Wednesday: The closure will run within the same perimeter and is likely to start in the morning.
Multiple rockslides were reported along the Big Sur coast on New Year's Eve initially, forcing a shutdown which lasted for days since then.

Highway 1 from Ragged Point in San Luis Obispo County to 2.5 miles south of Big Sur in Monterey County. There is no estimate for reopening.
Highway 1 was initially closed late Friday after a slide at PM 32, just south of Esalen. Caltrans is sending maintenance crews to perform daytime storm patrol within the closure and are working to clear small debris from multiple slip outs in the roadway.
Debris is expected to be cleared tomorrow behind Paul's Slide, where it has reached the top of concrete barriers, according to Caltrans.
