Rumored Salinas Amazon Warehouse plans fall through

SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV)-- According to Salinas City Councilman Steve McShane, the rumored Amazon warehouse is no longer coming to Salinas.

He said an Amazon developer took the project from the table due to "growing costs of construction."

"I think we all know the cost of lumber and all of the development costs have just gone through the roof through COVID," said Salinas Mayor Kimbley Craig. "So I think that's probably a huge contributor to their decision."

Of the four rumored sites in California, the two under construction will continue.

The proposed warehouse would have gone on an unused plot of land on Abbott Street and Harris Road.

"That area has a specific plan that has been selected since 2010 and has always projected to have industrial development and we're very much hoping the city is very much focused on redeveloping - making sure that that vision of the specific plan gets executed," said Community Development for the City of Salinas Megan Hunter.

Plans for an Amazon warehouse are not completely off the table but the city will have to wait and see.
