The city of Marina is planning to build a pump track
MARINA, Calif. (KION) The city of Marina has approved a proposal to create a pump track for citizens.
It's been six years since Darius Rike, a Marina local and founder of the Monterey Off-Road Cycling Association (MORCA) came to the city to propose making a pump track. Now those plans are coming to fruition with the goal of building in Glorya Jean Tate Park. A quiet park in need of some TLC.
"That we turn this field which is a great field but if you walk around it it’s filled with gopher holes so we tried playing softball out here and it’s unfortunate that it’s not really workable so coming up with a better plan for this location,” said Cristina Medina Dirksen, a Marina city councilmember.
The pump track isn't the only part of the plan but they also plan on creating a dog park, enhancing the playground, and creating a track. The plan will be made in phases as funding becomes available.
'The priority is hopefully by next summer, we get a pump track here,” said Dirksen.
Right now, the city went out to bid, looking at how much the project will cost and who would be able to do it. Since November 2nd, the mayor says they have given the ok to spend 1.5 million dollars to start. The president of MORCA says this addition to the city is exciting.
"A pump track gives a focus to kids and families to learn skills so when they go out there on the trail. they feel more confident and have more fun," said Mike McGarr.
Councilmember Dirksen says they're not sure how long the bidding process will take but hope the pump track will be done by next summer.
