Labor Day Weekend: How have businesses fared during the holiday?
MONTEREY, Calif. (KION) Over the Labor Day weekend, the central coast saw lots of tourists flock to Fisherman's Wharf.
KION spoke with businesses on Old Fisherman's Wharf who say the Labor Day weekend was successful.
“We experienced one of the biggest labor day weekends in the history of our businesses,” said Chris Shake, CEO of Old Fisherman's Grotto.
Business owners say the months of August, September, and October are crucial months for European tourism but with border restrictions limiting travel to the U.S., there's been a lack of international tourists.
"August, September is the heavy month for France, Italy, and Germany…. not even one. I haven’t seen any,” said Sam Mercurio, Co-proprietor of Domenico's.
While international tourism isn't what it used to be, businesses say there's been a lot of domestic travel from different parts of the state and country, including tourists from Lake Tahoe looking to escape the Caldor Fire.
“California has really traveled within California. We’ve had people from Oregon, Washington, Nevada, Arizona, " said Benji Shake, owner of Princess Monterey Whale Watching.
