New Salinas brewery signage allowed to stay

SALINAS, Calif. (KION)

UPDATE 8/9/2021 11:30 a.m. The Brew-N-Krew Alw House in downtown Salinas will be allowed to keep its overhead signage up, business owner Marlene Garcia said in a social media post.

Garcia said she met up with Salinas City Manager Steven Carrigan and learned the news.

"Grateful to have the communities support. I have read every message, comment, & seen your posts. We are blessed to be part of such a loving community. Thanks to EVERYONE who advocated for the signage & again to Signs By Van for making them so beautifully! You are all REAL ONES," she wrote in a Twitter post.

PREVIOUS STORY: The Brew-N-Krew Ale House in downtown Salinas is facing some issues concerning its overhead signage on the property.

Community Development Director Megan Hunter tells KION that the sign directly above the entrance to the business is too large according to certain city codes.

The owner of the business, along with her signage contractor, both tell KION they were not informed of the particular codes the city is speaking about in this case. They say they did not know they were breaking any specific city codes when they put up the signage.

Salinas City Councilman Steve McShane tells KION he has the word of the city manager that the issue will be resolved quickly and as soon as Friday. McShane wants businesses to know that the city supports them.

"We're trying to work with business owners, we're very sympathetic," said Hunter. "It's been a very difficult year with the pandemic. We're not trying to be punitive." But Hunter also says they will have to enforce the city code when needed.
