Monolith appears in San Luis Obispo County

SAN LUIS OBISPO COUNTY, Calif. (KION and KEYT) Another mysterious monolith has been spotted, and this time it is closer to home.

The metal obelisk appeared at the top of Pine Mountain Loop at Stadium Park in Atascadero, according to KION's sister station in the area, and it is at the top of a two-mile hike.

Over the past several weeks, similar sightings have been reported around the world.

The monolith is similar to one found in a Utah desert that was later removed, according to KEYT. Another similar monolith was spotted later in Romania before it too disappeared. Some have compared the monolith sightings to Stanley Kubrick's 1968 film, 2001: A Space Odyssey, but it is still unclear who put them there, who removed them, why they were placed in the locations and if they are related.

Some theories about them circulating on social media include that they are art pieces meant to cause confusion or that aliens planted the devices, though experts say it is unlikely that they are the work of anything out of this world.

KEYT says it will be watching closely to see how long the obelisk will be at that location.
