Man arrested for operating suspected chop shop in Watsonville

WATSONVILLE, Calif. (KION) A man has been arrested for operating a suspected chop shop in Watsonville Monday morning.

Police began investigating over the weekend when officers responded to Grant Street and saw signs that there was a chop shop in progress.

They contacted the Santa Cruz County Auto Theft Taskforce, and they along with police and California Highway Patrol Officers went back to the area for a probation search Monday morning.

Officers said several cars were being dismantled, and they identified two stolen vehicles.

The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Gustavo Chavez, was arrested on auto theft, possession of stolen property and operating a chop shop charges.
