Caught on Camera: Two people seen stealing catalytic converter in Santa Cruz

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION) The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office is asking for help as they try to find two suspects accused of stealing a catalytic converter, and they shared a video to help with identification.

The Sheriff's Office said the theft happened at around 4 a.m. Thursday in the 1900 block of Maciel Avenue. In the video, the two suspects are seen checking under a Toyota Prius in a driveway about 20 minutes before the theft.

When the suspects return, the Sheriff's Office said it took them about three minutes to jack up the car and steal the catalytic converter.

The suspects were in what appeared to be a black Honda Civic, and the Sheriff's Office said they may be connected to other thefts in the area.

The Sheriff's Office reports that there have been 20 cases of catalytic converter thefts in Santa Cruz County this month, and there have been 130 thefts this year. Most of them involve theft from Toyota Prius vehicles.
