SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, Calif. (KION) To help community members prepare applications for U.S. citizenship, the Community Action Board of Santa Cruz County's Immigration Project is offering free legal naturalization services to eligible residents.

The organization said this is an effort to foster civic engagement, and last year, they provided services to more than 330 residents of Santa Cruz County and surrounding areas.

Lawful permanent residents can get consultation with the organization to find out if they are eligible for citizenship. To apply for naturalization to citizenship, some of the requirements are that you must live in the U.S. as a lawful permanent resident for a minimum number of years, display good moral character and be physically present in the U.S.

Filing fees for naturalization currently cost $725, but SCCIP says planned fee increases may raise the cost soon. Some applicants could qualify for a fee waiver if they are low-income or qualify for benefits, including Medi-Cal and CalFresh.

To schedule a free consultation, call the office at 831-724-5667.
