Narrow margin in Santa Cruz City Council race as candidates wait for final votes to arrive

SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION) A field of nine candidates were running for four seats on the Santa Cruz City Council.

The all-women group of candidates include two incumbents; Martine Watkins and Sandy Brown. Kelsey Hill, Kayla Kumar, Sonja Brunner, Elizabeth Conlan, Alicia Kuhl, Maria Cadenas and Shebreh Kalantari-Johnson make up the field.

About 10,000 votes are still left to be counted county-wide as of Thursday. The results show Sonja Brunner is in the lead with 14.8% of the vote, with incumbent Martine Watkins in second place picking up 14.7%. The other incumbent Sandy Brown has captured 14.2% and Shebreh Kalantari-Johnson narrowly leads Kayla Kumar with 13.2% of the city vote.
