Askew edges McShane so far in Mo. Co. District 4 race
SALINAS, Calif. (KION) Going into election night, many suspected the Monterey County District 4 Supervisor seat race would be a tight one.
And it certainly was the case Tuesday night, with MPUSD Board Member Wendy Root Askew edging out Salinas Councilmember Steve McShane in the results so far.
Both McShane and Askew had election night parties virtually, using video-sharing platforms. McShane was at his business in Salinas and Askew was at her home in Marina.
But both candidates say they are proud of the race they ran and area leaving it up to the voters to decide who becomes the next supervisor. Both say they put in long hours campaigning with loyal volunteer staff and supporters whom they are so thankful for.
"This has been a very positive election. I think we've surfaced a lot of issues, we've prioritized the work that needs to be done for District 4 in Monterey County. I have to really recognize the good campaign that Wendy Askew made and I'm proud of the campaign we made as well," said McShane.
"I'm so proud of all of the outreach that we've done and like I said I want to make sure we get every single vote counted. There have been people turning in ballots right up until 8 o'clock. I'm just so pleased that I've been able to be a part of something like this," said Askew.
The district four race has churned out a lot of campaign contributions in the last year, with a combined total of over a million dollars.
McShane raised more than double the dollar amount of donations Askew received with both spending a portion on TV ads and flyers.
McShane and Askew both say they will accept the results of the election as votes continue to pour in.
