Debris flow netting along Highway 1

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION) Caltrans is installing debris flow netting above Highway 1 near the Dolan Fire burn area.

According to Public Information Officer Jim Shivers, the netting will prevent large rocks and debris from reaching the highway when winter storms go through the area.

The Monterey County Office of Emergency Services released a Burn Area Emergency Response report last week that details potential risks and how to reduce threats around the burn area last week. Based on field surveys and models, Monterey County OES said impacts from debris flow, flooding or rock falls are likely to impact human life and safety. Roads at the base of steep slopes or in steep areas are identified as areas at risk of debris flows, rock fall, increased runoff and hazard trees.

The incident management team in charge of the Dolan Fire said crews started grading the North Coast Ridge Road Thursday and has been continuing with repair work and removing downed trees on Nacimiento-Fergusson Road.

The fire has burned 124,924 and is still 98% contained.
