Sea lion rescued from roadway in Elkhorn Slough
ELKHORN SLOUGH, Calif. (KION) The California Highway Patrol said it responded to an unusual traffic hazard Wednesday afternoon.
At about 1 p.m., a tree cutting crew working in the area reported that there was a sea lion in the road. When a CHP officer arrived, they found the California Sea Lion on the right shoulder and called the Marine Mammal Center for help.
The tree service workers and CHP officer began one-way traffic control along Elkhorn Road until staff from the center got there.
When they arrived, they were able to move the sea lion into a crate. They say she is a 100-pound adult female, and the distance she swam is considered unusual.
The sea lion was taken by the Marine Mammal Center to a veterinarian in Sausalito. The CHP says she will be known as the 730 "Protector."
