Highway 1 closed Monday morning after vehicle crashes into guardrail, passenger shot in face
WATSONVILLE, Calif. (KION)
UPDATE 10/5/2020 4 p.m. The California Highway Patrol closed part of Highway 1 this morning following an incident that led to a crash, and investigators believe drug use was a contributing factor.
Two males were inside a Toyota Tacoma at around 8:15 a.m. heading south on Highway 1 and north of Riverside Drive when they got in a fight.
During the fight, the vehicle hit a guardrail and the passenger was shot in the face with a handgun, according to the CHP. Officers said one of the people in the vehicle was "in crisis."
The passenger had significant injuries, but is expected to survive.
Southbound Highway 1 was closed for several hours while the CHP and the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office conducted an investigation at the scene.
UPDATE 10/5/2020 1 p.m. The California Highway Patrol said Highway 1 has reopened following an incident this morning.
