Monterey police arrest suspect in series of burglaries, prowling incidents

MONTEREY, Calif. (KION) A man has been arrested in connection to several home burglaries and prowling incidents on the Monterey Peninsula.

The suspect, Alvaro Asevedo, was booked into the Monterey County Jail on burglary charges.

On July 11 at about 1:30 p.m., police said they responded to a report of a person prowling outside of a home in the 300 block of Hannon. The victim saw the person prowling at around 4:40 a.m. later when reviewing home surveillance video.

In Seaside, officers responded to a report of a burglary in progress at about 9:15 p.m. on Aug. 1 in the 900 block of Trinity. Witnesses told police they saw the person leaving the home, and the homeowner was not there. The suspect was not found when officers searched the area.

Another prowling incident was reported on Sept. 4 at about 2:20 a.m. in Monterey. Officers responded to the 200 block of Edinburgh and contacted 39-year-old Asevedo walking in the neighborhood. At they time, they could not confirm that he was the suspect in the incident, so he was released.

Later the same day at about 4:12 p.m., officers investigated a prowling incident that happened earlier in the day in the 200 block of Lerwick. The resident saw a person prowling at around 1:40 a.m. when reviewing home surveillance video. When they saw the video, officers identified Asevedo as the suspect.

Two days later on Sept. 6, Monterey police investigated a burglary in the same area, the 200 block of Lerwick. The victim said a person tried to get into the home through an open window, but left before getting all the way inside. When reviewing home surveillance that showed the suspect, officers again identified Asevedo, but they did not know where he was.

On Sept. 14, another prowling incident was reported in Monterey. The prowling happened at around 4:40 a.m. in the 500 block of Ramona, and the victim reported it after reviewing home surveillance video later in the day. Officers again identified Asevedo as the suspect after reviewing home surveillance video.

Asevedo was eventually found and arrested on Sept. 18 at around 10:30 p.m. near English and Del Monte.
