Fire crews respond to wildfire near Zayante

SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, Calif. (KION)

UPDATE 9/23/2020 4:20 p.m. Fire agencies said the forward rate of spread of the Ellen Fire has stopped.

It is about a quarter acre, according to Cal Fire. They said crews will stay at the scene until the fire is contained and they finish mopping up.

Cal Fire said the fire was burning off Weston Ridge Road in heavy timber with heavy forest understory. It started at about 2 p.m., and the cause is still under investigation.

PREVIOUS STORY: Several fire agencies are responding to the Ellen Fire near Zayante.

The Felton Fire Protection District said the cause and size are unknown because crews are still trying to get access to the area.

Cal Fire CZU reports that the fire is burning in timber on Upper Ellen Road. There are aircraft on the scene.

The Felton Fire Protection District said there are no evacuations in place right now, but they do not have any more details.

The fire district is responding along with units from Cal Fire and Zayante Fire. The Scotts Valley Fire District said there may be smoke visible from their area.
