El condado de Monterey investiga un tiroteo doble en Soledad

PAJARO, Calif. (KION) The Monterey County Sheriff's Office said one person was injured and another died of their injuries as a result of a shooting in the Pajaro area Monday night.

The Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a shooting near San Juan Road and Porter Drive at around 10:30, and when they arrived, they found one victim at the Quik Stop on Porter. A second victim was found two blocks away at the end of Gonda and later died of their injuries.

The first victim is alive, but the Sheriff's Office did not know what person's condition is at this time.

“Right now all we have is where we found the victims. I don’t know exactly where it happened that’s a huge part of the investigation that we’re going to be working on,” Chief Deputy John Thornburg said.

KION spoke with Wendy Holbert and her son who told us a victim came up to them at the Quik Stop.

“He turned around and my son saw the blood coming out of his back. Me and my son both jumped out of the car,” Holbert said.

She did what she could to help.

“I was able to get a compress on the front of him and the back of him,” Holbert said. “I could feel the blood pulsating out of him.”

Details about the case are limited at this time, like how this all started.

“There’s nothing specific to this particular shooting that we can say, ‘it stemmed from this problem led to this.’ Everybody always wants to know, is it a gang shooting, is it not–we don’t have the information right now to answer that question,” Chief Deputy Thornburg said.

An area worker we spoke with tells me she doesn’t feel safe here with incidents like this happening in the community. She didn’t want to show her face on camera but said patrols are rare.

“I am fearful to be in this area, especially at night because there aren't any patrols and we don’t know if anyone may attack us or rob us,” the worker said in Spanish.

She said they would feel better if there was more surveillance.

Authorities couldn’t tell us any additional information about the victim who died.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff's Office at 831-755-3700.
