Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg dies at 87
(KION) The Supreme Court announced Friday that Associate Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has died at the age of 87.
According to the news release from the Supreme Court, Ginsburg died from complications of metastatic pancreatic cancer at her home surrounded by family.
She was first appointed to the Supreme Court by President Bill Clinton, and she was only the second woman appointed. She served for more than 27 years.
"Our Nation has lost a jurist of historic stature. We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague. Today we mourn, but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her-- a tireless and resolute champion of justice," wrote Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr.
More recently, she served as the most senor member of the court's liberal wing.
She suffered a recurrence of cancer earlier this year when a biopsy showed lesions on her liver. She said she was seeing positive results from chemotherapy and that she as able to stay active.
"I have often said I would remain a member of the Court as long as I can do the job full steam," she said in a statement in July 2020. " I remain fully able to do that."
A private funeral service will be held at Arlington National Cemetery.
