SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION) A man has been arrested in connection to a stabbing that allegedly happened in response to an incident involving two females.

Police responded to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon around Depot Park at about 3 a.m. Sunday and found 43-year-old Joshua Newell with multiple stab wounds. He was unresponsive and later pronounced dead. Newell had recently moved to the Santa Cruz area from Colorado, but police do not know how long he had been living in the area.

Investigators identified 34-year-old David Cameron as the suspect, and he was arrested in the 300 block of Cedar Street. Officers said he had evidence linking him to the stabbing. Cameron was booked into the Santa Cruz County Jail on murder and probation violation charges.

After consulting with the Santa Cruz County District Attorney's Office, police said there is not enough information right now to go ahead with the murder charge. They have not been filed, but Cameron is still in custody for probation violation.

Detectives believe the stabbing was part of a physical fight between Cameron and Newell, and it may have been in response to a different incident involving two females.

Anyone with information is asked to call police at 831-420-5820.
