MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION)

UPDATE 9/9/2020 10 a.m. Cal Fire has issued a smoke and dust whirl advisory for the areas around the Carmel and River Fire burn sites, and they said a haze will be visible in the area.

The agency said the smoke it may be smoldering vegetation, but it is expected to dissipate in time. People may also see dust whirls.

PREVIOUS STORY: Cal Fire has issued a smoke advisory related to the River and Carmel Fires, which are both fully contained.

Crews said that there are still dangers due to the hot weather and lower relative humidity, so they are patrolling the containment lines and pockets of unburned vegetation within the fire perimeters.

Cal Fire said smoldering vegetation within the fire perimeters will continue to burn, and smoke from that will rise and be visible.

Residents are asked to only call 911 if they see fire outside of the fire perimeters.

The agency is also warning people to stay away from downed power lines if they see them and contact PG&E. Those returning home should also be on the lookout for potential hazards, such as trees and rocks that may be loosened by fire.
