Businesses pulling through Labor Day weekend beach closures
PACIFIC GROVE, Calif. (KION)
Beach closures across the central coast have not stopped many people from heading to the shores, but local businesses such as restaurants and shops along the shores say they have seen a customer slow down over the weekend.
The beaches are currently open to exercise and other physical activities.
One manager at a bike rental service on the Lover' Point shore says business there has actually gone up during the closures.
"Everybody's got cabin fever, everybody's stuck inside, the fires, the smoke, the air has actually been good by the ocean so we've had more people come down here," Says Michael Smith.
He attributes it to what he says has been an increase in physical activities.
The general Manager at The Beach House Restaurant on Ocean Ave says the turn out on labor day was not exactly at a high point.
"We used to do somewhere between three hundred and four hundred, now we're doing maximum two hundred so we definitely lost about half our every day business," says Jair Cervantes.
Cervantes says there is still a looming fear of potential closures in the future.
"It's always in the back of your head just because you don't know when it ca happen again," says Cervantes.
"It's not fair for us putting ourselves out every day just for them to shut us down once again."
Holiday weekends are typically good revenue for most businesses.
The businesses on Pacific Grove say they are grateful the beach closures did not stop people from coming out to enjoy a nice meal or a bike ride by the shore.
