SCOTTS VALLEY, Calif. (KION) The Scotts Valley Police Department said it has been overwhelmed by the number of requests for officers to retrieve items from homes and businesses in evacuated areas.

Police said they have tried to help, but because demand is so high, they shared guidelines to make the process easier.

Requests can be approved with police escort, approved for officer retrieval or not approved.

Requests that will not be approved include:

  • Turning off propane tanks
  • Retrieving personal items, such as valuables, paperwork, clothing or other items

Requests that will be approved with police escort include:

  • To get pets left at home
  • To get work vehicles, tools or items directly related to their livelihood, but only allowed once
  • Retrieve a friend or family member who needs to be evacuated

Requests that will be approved for officer retrieval include:

  • Retrieve medicine or medical equipment if all other options for getting it elsewhere have been exhausted
  • Lock houses or businesses
  • Turn off sprinklers

These requests will only be allowed between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. To make a request, call police dispatch at 831-440-5670. Requests for retrieval may take several hours, so the department is asking for patience.
