Hundreds found camping in prohibited areas of Big Sur over the weekend

BIG SUR, Calif. (KION) The Monterey County Sheriff's Office is asking visitors to camp only in designated campgrounds.

The department said it contacted hundreds of prohibited roadside campers last weekend.

The Sheriff's Office is reminding visitors that signs are posted all around Highway 1 to let them know that camping is prohibited, and they said there are designated sites to choose from.

Officials are also warning against campfires outside designated campgrounds. The Sheriff's Office, the CHP, the U.S. Forest Service, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, California State Parks have all been out enforcing rules around camping and campfires, but also educating about the potential dangers.
