WATSONVILLE, Calif. (KION)

Watsonville residents Anthony Aguilar and Deisy Aguilar Mora say they received an overwhelming and positive reaction from the community after creating unique face masks for those with hearing impairments.

The Aguilars say they began creating the masks for their own family when they received a request from a friend asking them to make one for their child, who is deaf.

They are creating more masks, paying out of their own pocket and donating some to the community.

The Aguilars say regular face masks create a challenge for those who rely on lip reading for communication.

“When you’re communicating with someone, instead of eye movement, you can actually see lips and see their expressions…having the communication with someone not just getting a weird look or not understanding properly,” says Anthony Aguilar.

The Aguilars say the masks are not limited to those with hearing impairments.
